I am an artist and educator based in West London. I have been making for over 40 years and teaching for 30 years. I was born in East Africa, Tanzania and moved to England in 1967
My practice explores the idea that textiles hold our stories, stimulate our memories, and express our beliefs. I am interested in examining the hidden meaning, looking beyond the purely aesthetic qualities of textiles.
This pathway has led to re-examining the colours, patterns and symbolism associated with traditional Indian textiles. At first glance, the ornamentation seduces the viewer. However, such a reductive viewpoint prevents a deeper understanding of these textiles. Although I am fascinated by the decorative qualities, it is more about how these textiles were used to tell stories about the makers, the history and the memories they hold.
I make large mixed media hangings, paper and fabric collages using print-making techniques such as monotypes, collagraphs, and screen prints. Other processes include dyeing and decolourant. The work develops through layers of marks, patterns, and text with the final layer of hand stitching.
These works document my daily life, looking at the urban, natural and social environments I inhabit. I begin by gathering information about my heritage, places, events and ceremonies that are personal to me. Just as the makers of traditional Indian textiles documented their lives I am mapping my journeys. The narrative and aesthetic qualities are equally important to my practice. The aim is to celebrate tradition, yet create a new relevant contemporary dialogue.
